Malayalam Localization

This is a call to all active Malayalam bloggers to participate in Malayalam Localization efforts. Localization involves translating all the menus and messages of various programs to Malayalam (in Unicode). I'm aware of some efforts that were started towards localizing GNU/Linux to Malayalam (and to which I contributed a little too). See the localization initiative by the Government. Also see Swathantra Malayalam Computing and its associated mailing-list, the GNU-Malayalam discussion list and the Localization Newsletter from the IndLinux project.

I'm not very sure how active these forums are at the moment. But it would be great if various Malayalam computing efforts going on in different spheres (and the people involved) could come together...

The above efforts are not just about localization (they also work on input methods, rendering modules, fonts etc.) But localization is the easiest thing for everyone to participate in. Also localization is relevant not just for the GNU/Linux desktops, but for developing the vocabulary for Malayalam computing in general.

Localization calls for a lot of imagination and understanding. High up in the list of priorities, I believe, is functionality and usability. It's not about concocting high-sounding Sanskrit words. The challenge is to find easy to use words which are accessible to a large section of the Malayalam speaking population, across various levels of education. I believe the blogger community can rise up to this challenge!

Update: Came across a Malayalam Localization of Firefox.

The IT textbook is fairly English-intensive. I just read the first chapter (btw, the approach -- of IT training through an unrelated project -- looks pretty promising). The whole text is peppered with English words like "compression utility," "formatting toolbar" and even "digital intelligence."

I guess that's OK if we're thinking of training people for IT vocations. But the target audience is different here. If IT has to become useful for the larger Malayalam speaking community -- who may just want to use some communication tools and browse the net (rather than use the computer to prepare project reports or process data) -- shouldn't we have more Malayalam vocabulary?

As for the best way forward, even if the old localization teams are currently inactive, wouldn't it be the best plan to reuse what they have already done and use the experience they have acquired, rather than start from scratch?

Finally, I agree with you that the rendering is the first thing to be fixed. Any clue how to go about it? (Someone told me the Ubuntu distribution can render Tamil correctly. Is that true?)

Though I've a Ubuntu box I never tried to read tamil in it. I will check it out and let you know. Please check this link: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2005-May/msg00077.html

But my real concern is working with earlier translation projects. Since they already started translation and able to roll out a GNOME distribution (Kerala Industry), we may be forced to follow their glossary of technical terms. Which I believe is not useful for the common man (SMC & Kerala Industry, uses a mix of sanskrit derived technical terms for translation project)
